2. Is God Real?
Many people are unsure if God exists. While there is strong scientific evidence that the universe was designed, there is no scientific proof. The existence of God is not scientifically provable. In order to find God, a person must “come to the end of yourself” and ask God to help them. The concept of “coming to the end of yourself” is theological and metaphysical, not scientific. God reveals Himself to people who want to have deep, personal relationships with Him. God does not want people to be merely aware of His existence, but God wants people to follow Him (James 2:19, James 4:8, John 15:4).
Many Challenges Exist To Explain God and the Universe
Obviously, explaining God’s eternally existence is very challenging. Further, explaining God’s eternal existence is scientifically impossible to test or prove because science requires events to be repeatable and observable. Theologians and philosophers attempt to explain God’s existence by stating that God is an uncaused first cause and God exists external of time, but this statement is not scientific proof.¹
While the concept of an eternal God challenges human comprehension, explaining the universe also similar challenges. For example, has our universe existed forever without God? Further, scientists believe that our universe began to exist approximately 14 billion years ago with the Big Bang, but scientists do not know what caused the Big Bang to occur.² Further, even if scientists developed a hypothesis to explain how the Big Bang occurred without God, their hypothesis would be untestable because the Big Bang cannot be repeated.
Searching for God’s existence and studying the universe’s origin are not scientific problems because science depends on testing and repeatability. Further, God’s very nature is outside the realm of our natural universe. Also, examining the universe is also not a scientific because repeatability prohibits humanity from studying the origin of the universe.
Evidence that God Created the Universe
While there is no scientific proof that God created the universe, there is strong evidence. Scientists have identified approximately 30 constants which enable the development of life in the universe. Scientists describe the values of these 30 constants as fine-tuned because slight variations would prohibit the development of life in the universe.³ Scientists have developed several hypothetical solutions to explain the fine-tuning problem, but scientists lack evidence to support these hypothetical solutions.
Conceptualizing the universe without God creates many fundamentally “hard problems” which are rarely addressed within the scientific community. One of the most challenging problems is explaining why our universe has three-dimensions. Scientists acknowledge that atoms, galaxies, and life are only stable in three-dimensional space. Additionally, scientists acknowledge that three-dimensional space provides thermodynamic stability and optimal complexity. However, naturalism does not provide any proven scientific theories to explain why our universe has three-dimensions.⁴
Explaining time is also a very challenging problem. Scientists hypothesize that time must exist in order for our universe to operate, but there are no proven theories that explain how time was created.⁵ Gravity also defines simple explanations because gravity is the outcome of energy and mass curving spacetime, but why does mass cause spacetime to bend? Quantum physicists recognize this question as one of the most intellectual questions in physics.⁶ Another very challenging problem is explaining subatomic particles. Protons and neutrons are composed of quarks, and there are six types of quarks. However, if our universe only had four types of quarks, our universe would be unstable and life would not exist. Scientists do not have any proven scientific theories to explain why our universe has six types of quarks.⁷
Theologians believe that God must have designed our universe to support life. The fine-tuning of these constants, and the existence of three-dimensions, time, gravity, and six quarks shows that physical forces and constants are within a very limited scope to allow life to exist. Very small changes in these forces and constants would prohibit planets, stars, chemical elements, and life from existing.⁸
No Scientific Solutions to Fine-Tuning And “Hard Problems”
Scientists have been unable to resolve the fine-tuning problem because nearly 30 forces and constants are fine-tuned in order to allow galaxies, stars, and life to exist. Scientists have developed several hypothetical solutions to explain the fine-tuning problem, but scientists lack evidence to support these hypothetical solutions. The most widespread resolution is the multiverse hypothesis, which suggests that an infinite number of universes coexist with different physical constants.
The cosmological multiverse hypothesis is not a scientific theory, however, because it is impossible to test or falsify. Critics have described the cosmological multiverse hypothesis as pseudoscience because it is not compatible with the accepted scientific methodology. A fundamental problem with the cosmological multiverse hypothesis is the measure problem because in an infinite multiverse, everything that can physically happen will occur an infinite number of times. Also, scientists have not found any interactions with our universe and other universes.⁹
Additionally, the multiverse hypothesis suggests that an infinite number of universes exists, which allows our universe to support life. However, the multiverse hypothesis does not even begin to address the underlying issue of fine-tuning because the multiverse hypothesis depends on unproven processes that create universes. In order for a multiverse to create universes that support life, the scientific framework that produces the universes, such as cosmological inflation, must be fine-tuned. So, the processes that create the cosmological multiverse are also fine-tuned.¹⁰
Life Defies Simple Natural Explanations
Besides the scientific evidence, metaphysical evidence also shows that God created life. Metaphysics attempts to examine topics which are beyond ordinary science. For example, consciousness and morality are metaphysical, and physical scientific theories are unable to explain how consciousness and morality occur. Naturalism simply cannot explain consciousness or morality.
Within the scientific community, consciousness is considered to be a “hard problem” because scientists do not understand why a physical state is nonconscious or conscious. Obviously, animals and people are consciousness, but consciousness is not required for animals or people to exist. The majority of life, such as plants and fungi, are alive, but they are unconsciousness because these organisms lack the neural framework that is necessary for awareness. Hypothetically, animals and people could be unconsciousness zombies because consciousness is not required for survival. So, if complex organisms can exist without being consciousness, this creates the problem of explaining why consciousness exists in our universe.¹¹
Explaining morality is also a challenging problem because throughout time, humans have identified the existence of objective morality. Everyone acknowledges that morality exists, but naturalism cannot explain the universalism of morality. For example, ancient mythologies and remote tribes have identified murder as a crime, which implies that all humans have an objective moral code. Naturalism cannot explain the objectivity of morality, and this implies that God created humans with an objective moral code.¹²
Searching For God
Strong scientific evidence shows that God created our universe, but many people still have doubts regarding God’s existence. Many people wonder why God chooses not to make His existence completely obvious to everyone. For example, God could perform many miracles on the Earth, or God could inhabit a temple in Jerusalem to prove His existence. Understanding the answer to this question is the very core of the Gospel.
Fundamentally, searching for God is not a scientific problem because God is an individual. God has a mind, personality, and emotions (Ephesians 1:11, Genesis 6:6, John 3:16, Psalms 18:6). God is not an abstract force. As an individual, God can choose to reveal Himself to certain people if He desires (Romans 9:15, Matthew 11:27).
Further, God desires everyone to have a personal relationship with Him. God does not desire people to be merely aware of His existence. For example, in the Bible, demons are described as being fully aware of God’s existence, but they completely refuse to obey God (James 2:19). Instead, God desires everyone to have an intimate, personal relationship with Him (James 4:8, John 15:4).
In order to find God, everyone must carefully examine why they are searching for Him. The Bible teaches that overpowering proof of God’s existence would not create a deep, personal relationship with God (Luke 16:31). So, everyone must carefully consider whether they want to have an intimate relationship with God, or if they simply want to be aware of God’s existence. Further, God desires everyone to deny themselves, repent of their sins, take up their cross, and follow Him daily (Luke 9:23). Unfortunately, the vast majority of people are not willing to submit to God and repent of their sins.¹³
How Can a Person Find God?
So, how can a person develop an intimate relationship with God? First, a person must realize that searching for God is a philosophical and metaphysical problem, not a scientific problem. God does not simply want people to be aware of His existence, but God desires everyone to have a personal relationship with Him.
Further, God is very aware that mankind lacks scientific evidence that He exists. So, God wants everyone to “come to the end of yourself” and genuinely ask God to show them the truth. The concept of “coming to the end of yourself” is a spiritual state because we must realize our limitations and completely trust God to show us the truth (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Fundamentally, “coming to the end of yourself” is a desperate desire that God would reveal the truth (Jeremiah 29:13). Everyone must recognize their limitations and surrender their life to God (Galatians 2:20). A person must trust that God will provide and choose to completely turn away from self-reliance (2 Corinthians 12:9). “Coming to the end of yourself” also involves accepting humility and submitting to God’s will for our lives. God provides grace for the humble, but God opposes the proud (James 4:6).
The concept of “coming to the end of yourself” is illustrated in the Bible with the prodigal son parable. The prodigal son used his inheritance for temporary enjoyment rather than wise investments. He finally reached the end of himself when he was starving and had to feed pigs for a living. He choose to surrender his pride and returned to his father (Luke 15:11-32). The prodigal son parable illustrates “coming to the end of yourself” because the son reached a state of complete exhaustion and emptiness before he chose to return to his father.
Conclusions
Extensive evidence shows that God created the universe, but there is no absolute proof that God exists. The fine-tuning, “hard problems,” and metaphysical problems provide strong evidence that God exists, but they do not prove that God existents. God desires personal relationships with everyone, and God does not want people to simply acknowledge His existence. The only method available to find God is by “coming to the end of yourself” and asking God for help.
